Question:

One of my african clawed frogs...

i have two of them and when i got them one was bigger than the other but now the smaller one is huge..uhm..is that normal??=| is the smaller one eating all the food?

  1. That could be it or one could be a male and the other be a female . I have two females one is gigantic but the other is smaller I think the big one is dominant. You should have no worries


  2. Could be. I had four firebelly toads and they almost had a hierarchy. The more dominant individual got the most food. The ones that ate less, had less energy to compete for food. In my experience, if one is a little bigger than the other this is no problem but you should observe them during feeding time. If you see that the smaller one is always getting his food snatched, think about separating them. Too much competition within one tank really puts stress on the less dominant animal. It can get to the point where it will just give up and starve, or the stress and perpetual hunger makes it more susceptible to illness.

    My two turtles could not stay in the same tank because one would steal all the food (he'd whack the other guy in the face with his claws by accident)...now I've separated them so that I can control how much they eat.

    Females do tend to be larger than males in reptiles and amphibians but this is only after sexual maturity. If you've seen that the little frog has grown a lot in a short time , while the other has not grown at all, then it's probably because he's getting all the food haha...
