I recently bought a kitty condo and some toys. One of my cats, whenever she is on it is very territorial over it. If one of the other cats even tries to get on it, she starts biting and hissing at them.

Plus, all of my cats have just become violent toward each other for no reason.

What can I do to ease the tension?

All of them are neutered/spayed.

  1. This is normal my 2 cats are the same one will not let the other on it & attacks the other but they do share it occasionally. Its a new & exciting toy for your cats at the moment so things should soon settle a bit spread the toys into different rooms.

  2. Chance are this is the older most likely female cat and anything that she likes is automatically her's and it's going to be hard if not impossible to change it's behavior. My first kitty in my house is named Precious and actually she isn't LOL She think since she was here first any other cats added must obey her wishes. She is a runt but rules with an iron paw and even the male cats that are nearly three times her size are afraid of her! They call female cats Queens and they aren't kidding because Precious sure believes she is Queen of this house I'm just glad she loves me because I might be in trouble if she didn't. The only thing I can say is you better think of getting a second kitty condo and hope she doesn't want both. :o)

  3. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LET THEM BE. You just introduced a new dimension to their territory. Don'T worry it's a good thing. Cats determine the territorial possession in 3 dimensions. Normally the dominant cat will occupy the highest point in the room (or the best spot to look over the room).

You cats had establish their territorial bounderies and were living by it but by putting  a cat condo you basicly added a new layer of territory and ALL the territorial limits of every cat has change in an instant.

It's a good thing because it allows each cat to have a little bit more space to work with. THe downside of this is that they must now re-arrange their territorial limits and the only way to do this is by hissing, growling and even fight.

You MUST LET THEM BE. Let them sort it out and do not interveen, separate or even look at them when they have agressive behavior (unless you see that one of the cat is being stalked for more than 2 weeks). If you interveen you will only make thing worst by holding the dominant cat from passing their messages to stay away of their newly acquired territory and the next opportunity he will have he will raise the bar of violence to make sure the message goes through. So the fights will get worst. So just let them be and they will soon have reestablish their territorial bounderies (Should take 2 weeks)

IT might be a good thing to add another cat Condo right away (put it in another room or at the opposing side of the room) if you feel that one cat owns the new cat condo.

Play a lot with them all together for the next 14 days.

    Good luck

  4. maybe the cat is going back to its natural instincts- every cat for themselves. if you spray the cat being territorial with a spray bottle, the cat might jump off, but it might get more mad. cats are also very independent, so this is normal. your cats just need to be with each other more, and hopefully get to know each other and become like family.
