Your friend probably was referring to Homo Sapiens Sapiens.  This is used sometimes to distinguish modern humans from Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis, commonly known as Neanderthals.  The issue of whether Neanderthals were a separate species or a sub-species of modern humans is still being debated in some circles.

The 1st post is correct, we are actualyl called homo sapiens sapiens.
