I bought 2 guinea Pigs yesterday. One of them seems to have settled really well he is very friendly, loves watching every thing going on around him and doesn't seem afraid of any thing. He also doesn't stop eating and drinking. This morning he was running around the cage and jumping up and down. So he is obviously happy. But the other guinea pig has stayed in house in the cage and has only come out a couple of times. The first time he came out both guinea pigs chased each other around and one mounted the other. There has been no fighting between them and they are cooing and rubbing noses. but the second guinea pig wont eat hardly any thing. He has eaten about 1 mouthful of hay and that's about it. He has not touched the water bottle to have a drink either. I know its early days and that guinea pigs can take awhile to settle but I'm still a little concerned. Could there be some thing wrong. Any advice would be much appreciated. I am giving them the same food and hay that pet shop was giving them. I have also tried fresh apples and carrots so far.

thanks in advance

  1. Guinea pigs take different amount of time to settle in.  Don't hold him or play with him until he starts eating or drinking.

Mine took almost 2 weeks to settle.

If he doesn't drink within a week, take him to the vet becuase he will get de-hydrated.

He is probably fine, but just very nervous.

Try putting in a soft toy in their cage, they can cuddle up to it.

  2. it could be that you just bought it could just be nervouse but take it to th evet if you want to better safe than srry

I would take the one that isn't eating to the vet just to be sure it is ok if I was you but it might just be taking a while to settle in?

  5. hi, my guinea pig was like this when we got him, i took him to the vet and they gave him an injection to stimulate hunger and thirst, it worked a treat and he settled soon after that. best of all, it was just two days after we got him, so we phoned the pet shop before phoning the vet and they said that because its been less than a week since we bought him from them that they would pay for anything that needed to be done at the vet! so if you got yours from a pet shop, phone the shop and enquire whether they have this same policy.

  6. Pet store pigs are usually sick.

    Here http://www.guinealynx.info/vet.html

You can complain and get them to pay for a vet bill. But usually they just offer to "replace them" and give you different sick pigs.

  7. keep an eye on him, he may just be really nervous with the new surroundings etc. If he does not continue to eat ring the vet and ask for their advice (it's free on the phone) they may ask you to bring him in. If he has nothing to eat or drink then it will be quite serious.

Maybe try and catch him at night as he may be more confident when its quieter.
