hi i have just come back from scotland on holiday to a four week old marine tank with live rock, cannister filters, powerheads galore. i left it with 3 green chromis and a hermit crab to mature, on returning the crab fine but only 1 chromis left the others perished.

(i have just yesterday set up my tunze 9005 protein skimmer maybe this will help it took 6 hours for it to start bubbling right).

the chromis that is left has a growth thing possibly, above its mouth on the inside which looks sore and he is looking a bit lethargic.

the ph is 8.1

nitrite non existant

temp 79.2

salinity 23

also as well as setting up the protein skimmer, i brought back and added some rock with polyps on, some anenomes 5 and some algae all from scotland all seem to be doing ok this morning, now what is wrong with the fish please help i will try to add a photo or 2. thanks

  1. The problem is, did anyone feed your fish while you are away? Did anyone do maintenance on your tank? marine fishes are more fragile and needs more care than freshwater. You mentioned that 2 of your green chromis has perished. More than likely, your hermit crab ate your 2 green chromis. Not to mention, all the toxins in the other 2 green chromis has released toxins into your tank when the fishes died, which will cause problems. That growth on the mouth of your fish could be caused by bacteria in the water. It is more than likely fungus of the mouth which shouuld be treated right away. By using chemicals, the Chemicals will kill your live rock and anemones. You will need to put your green chromis into an Quarantine tank to treat the fish.

The medicine of my choice would be melafix. You should always have someone monitoring your fish.

I hope that this helps........ Good luck
