One of the fascinating aspects of our species is the extraordinary physical and cultural diversity of its members. Yet this is a source of conflict and inequality, because differences rather than similarities between groups often shape human relationships. Often people are distinguished on the basis of their inherited physical characteristics or learned cultural traits. As the result of these differences, groups are formed and they are regarded by other people as being different.We must face the fact that throughout history relationships among racial and ethnic groups have been marked by antagonism, inequality, and violence.
