I am taking some classes to become a nursing assistant. A few months ago DODMERB gave me a hearing test and said I have poor hearing. I have never noticed and it has never affected me, until now. I cannot hear a heart beat through a normal stethoscope. My instructor told me I should get an amplified stethoscope but I cannot afford to put out that much money at the moment (although I will use it for the rest of its life considering I am going to college to become a DR.) Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is te most sensitive type and brand of stethoscope before you start getting into the electronic ones? I am so overwhelmed by the many different types and I am not sure what would be best for me. I.e.: Respiratory, cardiology, etc. Thank you so much for your time in reading my lenghty question! lol

  1. None of them is substantially a great improvement on a rolled-up newspaper.  I'd suggest you get the basic $20 Sprague-Rappaport type. No matter which you get, it won't last through medical school, anyway. The things are notorious for "growing legs." You'll hear better once you get the earpieces adjusted right for you, and once you get in some practice. It's a learned skill.

  2. I'm not sure what type you should get, but I got mine from here:

I think an electronic stethoscope would be best if you have poor hearing, but it's just personal preference. I would suggest using a general stethoscope until you decide what type you want.

Good luck on becoming a doctor
