We have a phone jack in our kitchen that has static whenever we plug a phone into the line. The other jacks in our house work fine. We've tested the outside box by plugging a phone into the jack and that worked fine. Our phone carrier is Verizon and we don't have a mainteance plan. Is this something that we can fix, or should we contact Verizon? We don't want to pay them a bunch of $ to fix this, plus they won't call us ahead of time to tell us when they'll be at our house.

  1. it may be the jack itself, they can be purchaced for $1 to 5 at any electrical supply house, lowes or home depot, just take note of the wires that are connected to the red and green wires on the jack, and connect those wires to the red and green on the new jack...

the wire may be defective, either at the jack, at the other end of the wire, which if the wire is inside the wall may be difficult to trace out with out a tone set, or somewhere in between..

if you can find the other end of the wire, either at the NID or another jack along the way try disconnecting the green and red (or blue/white solid blue) wires and connecting the yellow and black (orange/white, solid orange) wires to the green/red of the jack on both sides of the wire... if that fails after you replaced the jack, you will need to replace the wire...

be sure the line cord, connected to the phone/jack is good.. and that the static is not within the phone itself, if cordless make sure there is no interference from near by electronics like the microwave...

  2. If it is only the one jack that has the static, then I would suspect the wall jack at that location is defective.  They are easy to replace.  You can usually buy replacements at local department stores that have an electronics/telephones accessories section.
