  1. It could be as simple as a bad speaker selector switch. You can get around that by putting the speakers on a different set of speaker taps. I had one receiver that cut in and out all the time on the left channel. This one is also 20 or so yrs old. After tearing everything apart, including pulling the drivers from the speaker box checking for burnt voice coils. It turned out the selector button for the A jacks was scratching and had gotten burnt over time and finally cut out on the left. I just switched the speakers to the B speaker jacks and things worked again. The other thing easy enough to check at home is to see if the wires connecting the power to the speaker jack on the back of the receiver are loose,  Unplug the unit

before doing this. Then solder or otherwise reattach loose wires. Unfortunately, you may have to replace the receiver, as it's tough to work on them. Repair costs may be too high to warrant the trouble. Especially since for under 200 bucks there are some pretty decent stereo receivers out there. A bit more $$ for multichannel ones, but for 300 you can get a nice DENON A/V unit. I did and am pleased with it thus far.
