My sister in law is having twins but at 18 weeks she found out one of the babies isn't growing and there is a 95% chance it wont survive. She has gone for tests but they haven't come back yet. What would be the chances of the other one surviving? She has had a healthy baby in the last 13months but before that had many miscarriages and one still birth. They never said what the problem was but she does have high blood pressure..Is in her late 30's.. Any experinces? Thanks

  1. well, my sister was a twin, and the other baby didn't make it.  I think the chances are good that the other will survive, if everything looks fine with him/her.  I wish your family the very best!

  2. My family has a history of this type of situation also.  Generally the other one will survive.  She most likely will be put on bed rest to make sure the surviving twin stays healthy, especially with her age.  I wish your family the best of luck.

  3. I'm a mother of twins, now 3 years old. I faced many challenges in my pregnancy because of the type of twins they were and the fact that they only had one placenta to share. So although i was extremely lucky to have two healthy babies, im well aware of the risks that can come with it. If the baby is having growth retardation this early and that severe the chances are very very slim. I would not say impossible but they are very slim. I want to say my heart aches for your sister and your family. This is hard thing to have to go through and I wish your sister in law all the best., I will keep her im my thoughts

  4. My aunt had this situation.  The following may be a lot of detail, but I just want to put it out there.  Her 1 twin passed at 20 weeks.  The doctors said there was a certain percent that the other would be Downs or developementally handicapt.  They even asked her to consider terminating the pregnancy... she did not however.  Bryan is now 7 years old and waaayyy too smart for his own good!  He's beautiful, intelligent and perfectly healthy.

  5. How terrible!   I'm so sorry, but if one baby is growing there is no reason to think it will be in trouble just because the other one is.  They are two separate entities in the womb.

  6. My family also has a history of losing one twin in the 2nd trimester with the other twin doing just fine and going full-term and being just fine.  However, high blood pressure has never been an issue. All multiples in my family occur to women 38 and over.
