  1. I have been to Italy three times in the last few years, staying ten days to a month each time. Many beautiful places, Venice, Cinque Terre, Florence, if I only had one week ...

The Tuscany region is full of small, ancient hilltowns, only a short drive apart. You'll feel as if you've escaped the tourist crush, relax and take in the locals life. Drink some wine, experience some fantastic food and relax! San Gimignano is a central location, I've stayed at two wonderful rustic B&B's,Hotel Pescille (astounding view of the town), and Casale del Cotone, just Google or TripAdvisor to check them out. From Rome, a couple of hours north by the train to Siena or Florence and rent a car.

If you are including Rome in this trip, you could easily spend the week there, however I found Rome to be crowded, expensive, hot (yes, even in September), and NOISY (motorbikes up and down the streets at all hours). If I wanted one week of memories of Italy, I'd get out of the city and try to experience something more genuine and satisfying than "herding" through the familiar sights of Rome. Save that for a future excursion.

  2. It depends on the kind of vacation you want.  Rome is great for the history and the food there is much to see but it is a major city.  The Amalfi Coast is absolutely beautiful and warm in September also lots of tourists.  It is far from Rome and difficult to get around. Tuscany is very relaxing with amazing food and wine tasting. Although there were tourists it didn't feel like it was touristy. We stayed in Greve in Chianti which is a nice little town. We rented a car and a GPS from Autoeurope and drove all over Tuscany with no problems.  We hated Venice because it was so expensive and the food was terrible. This is the most touristy city in the world.  You will be there with millions of people, but it was interesting to see the canals.  We took a day trip to The Dolomites in the north and wish we could have stayed.

I recommend you look at a map of Italy and go to locations close to each other so you aren't spending all your time traveling.  Rome and Tuscany are pretty close. Also check out some guided tours for day trips.
