One week in Shengen Area around Munich?

Ill be travelling to Munich, entering and exiting thru Frankfurt this March w/ wife and 10-y/o kid, but only have 10 days of stay within Schengen area. Any tips on how to maximize our stay? We intend to cross country by train, what places can we visit without spending much?

In March it could be quite cold (although they are up until now having a very warm winter.  Munich itself has lots to see and do.  It depends on your interests.  Here are some suggestions: Olympic Village,  the city center of Munich, the Deutsches Museum, Nymphenburg and the Residenz, a walk through the Englischer Garten.  Unfortunately March isn't exactly prime  Briergarten time, but you'll still be able to find lots of stuff to see and do.  There is also a Spielzeug Museum (toy museum in the city cneter), and Munich has a great U-Bahn or Subway and tram/trolley/bus system.  There are a lot of interesting places near Munich.  You can take the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for a day trip to the Alps.  Neuschwanstein and Herrn Chiemsee are some interesting castles to visit, but you should check in advance to make sure that they are open.  I'm not sure if all attractions are open year-round, and I would rent a car to visit both those castles.  Or you could take the train to Nuremberg which is a really interesting place for a day trip as well.  Since you have 10 days you could make a side trip into Innsburck and Salzburg Austria as well (I don't know about the Schengen countries so you'd need to check on that).    Some other towns I like are Passau, Regensburg, Ingosltadt and Kelheim.  I recommend that you find a guidebook about Bavaria.  Make a note of the things that sound interesting to you and then either ask more specific questions here or do some more online research.
