Namco’s long running fighting series is set to receive the big screen treatment for a second time but this time Prachya Pinkaew, the director of Ong Bak, will be making the movie.
The thing about games such as Tekken is the sense that it allows writers, directors and pretty much everyone who wants to make a movie on the fighting series plenty of freedom to be creative. The basic character relations and storylines are there, with Jinn’s struggle with Kazuya and Heihachi or how Law and Paul interact, as well as the basic plot of a fighting tournament, however, when it comes to everything else, there are an infinite number of possibilities.
The last Tekken movie was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews. Some fans of the series enjoyed the big screen adaptations while others found it disappointing. The movie has a rating of 4.7 on IMDB which just goes to show what a love it or absolutely loathe it kind of film it was.
However, one Thai movie that had everyone’s attention when it came out was Ong Bak. The movie was a hit in the west as well as in Asia. The film had some of the best fight sequences in any movie and all the stunts were performed by the actor and no camera tricks were used.
Now the reader should put Ong Bak and Tekken together and the prospect does sound mouth watering. One does wonder how the storyline will hold up and which characters everyone is going to see, yet at the same time many will be looking forward to the action sequences in the movie.
According to reports the movie is set to be prequel to the 2010 film and is titled, “Tekken: Rise of the Tournament”. The director is apparently focused on ensuring that the actors look similar to their video game counterparts.
It is still early days and there are not enough details to share at this point, apart from those already mentioned, but this sounds like a movie that every action fan should be looking forward to. More news on this story as and when it breaks.
