  2. fry 2 onions until golden brown add 1 chicken stock cube not to much water add pepper to taste, thicken with corn flour/corn starch add salt if needed

  3. I just soften some chopped onions in a pan, add water, bring to the boil stir in gravy granules until I get the thickness i want and simmer. a splash of red wine sometimes. I do a similar thing with mushrooms minus the red wine.

  4. Onion Gravy -- 2 cups

    Ingredients

    2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 large onion, halved then sliced

    1 tablespoon plain flour

    12 fluid ounces chicken stock

    1 teaspoon dried mixed herb

    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

    Directions

    1) Heat the oil in a medium sized saucepan.

    2) Add the onions and sauté until brown, about 10 minutes.

    3) Sprinkle the flour over the onions and continue to cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes.

    4) Gradually add the stock, herbs and Worcestershire sauce and continue to cook until thickened.

    5) Partially cover and cook for a further 10-15 minutes to allow the flavours to develop, stirring from time to time.

  5. Onions+gravy

  6. Fry Sliced onion in butter or a good veg spread until they are softened.Take your time in cooking the onion.

Then add some sauce flour or plain flour & add some veg stock or water. Then chuck in an oxo cube or similar to give it that nice brown colour.Stir well until you get rids of the lumps [ you are sure to have a few.Sauce flour is easier to use. GOD BLESS DELIA for sauce flour]

    Let flour cook out.

Cook it on a medium heat you do not want crispy onoins.

A little s&p to taste if needed but with oxo it sould not need it.

Then serve with sausages & mash.

My mother in law taught me how to cook good onion gravy.

  7. 285ml (½ pint) Vegetable Stock or Water

    1 Large Onion

    1 tbsp Oil

    1 tbsp Heaped Flour

    1 Bay Leaf

    Pinch Dried Sage

    Soy Sauce

    Salt and Pepper, to taste

    Peel and chop the onion.

Heat the oil in a heavy based saucepan and add the onion, sauté gently until golden brown.

Add the flour and herbs, cook for 3-4 minutes, ensuring that the flour does not burn.

Gradually add the stock (or water), stirring constantly to prevent lumps.

Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add the soy sauce and season to taste.

Remove the bay leaf, serve as is or blend into a smooth sauce.

  8. Chop a huge onion or two and fry it on low heat in good quality olive oil until the onions go brown. You can put a little sugar (half a teaspoon or less) to caramelise them. Then get a vegetable stockcube and add water 2/3 of a pint or so. Simmer until stock cube is disolved and then add a little cornflour (disolve about a tablespoon in a tiny bit of water first before adding to the pan, this is to avoid lumps). Simmer until the gravy thickens (add more cornflour if needed). Taste it, if you need some more flavour add another veggie stock cube, some lea and perrins, some herbs
