Onkyo Receiver HDMI pass thru 7.1 HOW?

I have an Onkyo 7.1 receiver with HDMI inputs, which are pass thru only. I can run an optical connection either from the TV back to the receiver or directly from the device to the receiver, but optical cable can't seem to handle 7.1.

So what seems to be point in a 7.1 receiver if it doesn't take input from HDMI which is the only thing that can do 7.1 and just passes it on to the TV? Did I miss something here?

  1. I have an Onkyo 7.1 reciever, with a Sony blu-ray player, and a Sony Bravia HD TV.  I had the Blu-ray player, cable TV DVR input, and iPod (docked) all hooked up through the receiver and working fine.  After a while, the TV would start losing the signal when we switched from the VCR/DVR to the DVD on the receiver.  Now it can never locate the DVD player signal when played through the receiver.  When I hook up the blu-ray player directly to the TV, it works fine (but of course it doesn't go through my nice sound system).  I even tried buying a new Sony blu-ray player, but it has the same problem.  The receiver seems to have trouble receiving signals through the HDMI input for the DVD player.  I also tried swapping out cables, but that didn't fix it either.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Do you know how to fix it?  I spent a lot of money for that receiver, but I think it is the problem.

  2. if it helps i get dts through spdif from my pc to yamaha amplifier. best i have so far is dts discrete 6.1(stargate ultimate edition) + DD ex but i only have a 5.1 set up. u need ac3 filter set to spdif, dont install any other audio codec as they can conflict or create restore point. less codecs the better. also there are different qualities of cable. on my cd player the amp can receive dts 5.1 channel music through optical. I do not have any HDMI connections on my amp. The video goes straight to my monitor (also has HDMI) via DVI from pc as I seperate sound and visual.I do this for bluray, cd player, digital tv box, pc and ps3 which all can transmit dts via optical.
