Does anyone have this receiver connected to a blu ray player. I need to get settings on the receiver and player as im unable to get a blu ray dvd to decode it in DTS HD MASTER AUDIO.

as i have been told that it should be clearly displayed on the receiver as dts mstr hd but only seems to decode in DTS or DTS Neo. The blu ray im using in fantastic 4 rise of the silver surfer and it states on the back of the cover that audio is DTS HD MASTER AUDIO

Also does my blu ray player need to be dts hd master audio compatable as i dont know of any such players except the new pioneer which is £1000, or should my receiver be doing this.

Im using a sharp aquos 1080p lcd

onkyo sr605 receiver, kef 3005se speaker package and sharp bd-hp20h blu ray player,

I have read the manual but can not for the life of me figure this out. Currently connected via hdmi from blu ray to receiver then hdmi out to lcd tv.

Look forward to your kind replies.

  1. If you want to enjoy the advanced, HD audio formats offered by the Blu-ray Disc format you have only two choices when it comes to connecting your Sharp BD player to your Onkyo AVR. The first choice is that you can connect the 5.1 CH AUDIO OUT connections on the Sharp BD-HP20H to the corresponding 5.1-Channel audio input connections on your Onkyo AVR. The second choice, which would allow you to output the advanced, HD audio bitstreams, (assuming there are no HDMI handshaking issues,) is to connect the HDMI OUT on the Sharp BD-HP20H to one of the HDMI inputs on your Onkyo AVR.

As you are likely aware Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer is encoded with a 5.1-channel, lossless DTS-HD Master Audio surround soundtrack as well as lower performance 5.1-channel, 448kbps Dolby Digital surround soundtrack. Unfortunately your Sharp BD-HP20H, like Sony’s PS3 and many other HD disc players, does not support the new lossless DTS-HD Master Audio codec only the DTS Digital Surround “core” only. (“According to Sharp product manager Ning Ning Cheang, this was done for ‘licensing’ reasons.”)

If your HDMI connection functions properly and you want your AVR to handle all audio decoding chores rather than your BD player (and it appears that this is the case) then in the settings of your Sharp BD-HP20H you want to select HDMI OUTPUT under the AUDIO VIDEO SETTINGS - AUDIO OUT menu. Next, select AUTO for the audio output mode for use with HDMI connections.

What should happen when using this configuration is that, with a disc such as Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer, your BD player should automatically bitstream the surround sound audio format that is best suited for the connected equipment; hopefully this would be the 5.1-channel DTS “core” contained within the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Fantastic Four disc. Even though the DTS core can be digitally output through the S/PDIF outputs I would recommend that you continue to use the HDMI connection as a matter of convenience and improved audio performance for those occasions when you would like to play HD discs encoded with either of Dolby’s advanced HD audio codecs, i.e., Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD, or multichannel LPCM soundtracks.

Don’t feel bad, there are very, very few BD players capable of bitstreaming ALL of the advanced HD audio formats from DTS and Dolby. This shortcoming is expected to be changing significantly throughout this year with the release of newer generation BD players from companies such as Panasonic, Sony, Denon, et al.
