Hello, I have the option of a yamaha rx v463 or an onkyo tx sr506, which one should i choose? 7.1 is not the most important thing to me so i'd rather choose sound/ build quality and features. If anyone who knows about this stuff can help me out that would be great... Thanks

  1. for a little more of money, get the Yamaha rx-v 663 I own one and works great.

  2. This is tough.

Yamaha ... are rock solid receivers.  More musical, better built, better manufacturing, etc.  (I own 3 of them and have never had a problem.)

But Onkyo is ... trying harder.  They want to be where Dennon or Yamaha is so they are putting in a lot of features/bells into their 505/605/705 receivers that rival the higher end models.

If you were doing an audiophile system - Yamaha would be my recommendation.

But home theater .. is actually very different from music.  The features in the new Onkyo's are better suited to a home entertainment system with games, HD video/HDMI, Sat radio and iPod connections.

I'd go with the Onkyo only because the extra bells are actually useful in a modern system.

  3. If you are going to use the system primarily for music, get the Yamaha.

If you are going to use the system primarily for movies/games, get the Onkyo.

If you are going to use the system for a relativly equal mix, get the Yamaha.

As far as build quality, Yamaha beats Onkyo hands down.  Yamaha has the backing of its professional audio products and has been around for a long time.  They spend their time more on quality of features over quantity of features.

If it were my choice, I'd get the Yamaha, however I am also partial to harmon/kardon and Pioneer.  I've got one system of each, and both my roommate and my parents have Yamaha recievers.  Between Yamaha and Pioneer its a tossup- I prefer Pioneer, but thats personal preferance.  harmon/kardon however beats them both hands down.

I digress... But I would reccomend the Yamaha over the Onkyo any day.
