Online Movie p****y Continues To Soar, Says MPAA Study

Despite its best efforts to curb online movie p****y, the number of films being downloaded continues to rise, the Motion Picture Association of America revealed in a study released in Belgium Tuesday. According to the study, more than 2.5 billion movies were downloaded worldwide in 2005 -- a 250-percent increase over the previous year. (The MPAA's figures have been hotly disputed by other Internet analysts.) The study also indicated that at any one time, 17 million people are downloading movies via peer-to-peer websites. Most of the movies available via those sites were originally recorded in theaters by persons in their seats holding camcorders, the study said.

Does this mean that the honest paying will continue to pay higher ticket prices ,higher DVD prices because of this? Why isn't the MPAA actually going after these people for? What's stopping them?

  1. I'm afraid that, although p****y is rife, it is not the cause of rising ticket prices or DVD prices.  Certainly for films they're expected to be bigger and better and that means they cost more money.  This in turn gets passed down to say WB who want to show the film in the cinema, so they pay the higher price and pass it on to the consumer.

As for DVD's, generally they seem to have dropped, unless it's a major blockbuster you can get DVD's from between £1 and £20.  Blu-ray though is a new format and so new formats have higher prices generally.

And don't forget the writers strike. They got a royalty increase, bossting film costs still further.  Essentially, its part economy, part greed from film distributors
