Question:

Online UK brokers that allow international trades and CGT?

I'm looking to invest in stocks and shares but I want to have the option to invest in companies listed on the LSE, NYSE, NASDAQ and Yang Sing as well as ETFs. I've been looking at some online brokers and with E*Trade, for example it looks like you have to have seperate accounts to invest in UK and US markets https://uk.etrade.com/e/t/uk/home?htmlfile=aec_gc_products.html

If there are any I'd like an account where I can invest in both UK and international shares and ETFs. Also, how do online brokers deal with capital gains tax? I hear the rules on it are always changing and I'd rather it be calculated and deducted automatically.

I have been looking at http://www.selftrade.co.uk/services/personal-dealing/shares-isa.php has any one had any experience with them or does anyone have any recommendations for good online UK brokers?

  1. Different Markets have different opening times - and different rules - hence the different accounts .

CGT (and any 'higher rate' Tax due on Dividends) is payable by YOU, not the brokers ..

It would be impossible for any broker to deduct CGT anyway .. you pay CGT after using up your Allowance on Gains made (offset against Losses made) during the Tax year - since no single broker will have any idea of your total buying & selling during the last year, how could they do the calculations ?

Until you have a better grasp of share trading (and UK Tax) I suggest you stick to Index Trackers and consider putting any spare cash into an ISA (or SIPP)
