You can read classics and novels that are out of copyright for free at Project Gutenberg.

Most contemporary novels, however, are protected by copyright law. Any free downloads you find online will be illegal. There are some rare exceptions to this -- Cory Doctorow, for instance -- but generally speaking, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

I suggest making use of your local library or seeing if they have e-book checkout capabilities.
