  1. You said your friend moved to Canada. I am not sure if this will affect the answers I will give you, for they are all based in the states, with one exception- this first suggestion.

K12 International Academy goes from K up to 12th grade, so it would cover both middle school and Canada, and have the advantage that she wouldn't need to switch to another school for high school.

There are several curriculum suppliers that offer online classes for middle school. K12 if you purchase it independently, University of Missouri, and University of Nebraska are the three that I know of right off the top of my head, but there are many more! You would have to check with the last two to see if they take students from outside the USA, and if there are any legal restrictions in Canada to homeschooling or enrolling in private schools that are online.

Online education is definately growing in popularity. Each school really is different in the amount of workload, whether the class offers a teacher that uses a video conference, Elluminate or other mass meeting tool for the internet classes. Some have textbooks to work from; others have lessons that just get read off the computer or a download. Some have set meeting times for the class to meet online; others have the student working independently and just turning work in. My son's online classes has online quizzes that he takes, and papers that he emails to his teacher for grading, and most of the communication is by email.

I've included links for three options I mentioned. The U of N one is for the high school, but I know they have a catalog of middle school classes as well.

    Best of wishes,

    Shelley

  3. Best way to find out the info is to ask the school counselor

  4. suggest her to be home schooled

  5. Suggest that she talk to her parents about online schools. I am investigating such schools for my son (he will be in 7th grade next year). Alger Learning Center is in Sedro-Woolley, WA and cost roughly $1700 for a "long-distance" education. Another school we are looking at is Keystone (about $1400, we think). There are other schools to look at, I'm sure. (I do know there are several religion-based schools out there for homeschooling online.) Plus, homeschooling does not necessarily mean online schools. Her parents can contact a homeschool association in the area for info on which materials are available for them (and it is probably cheaper than online courses). Good luck!!
