  1. Online schooling is "really school." I'm a college student, strictly online and the work is the same - believe me. The only that's different - I'm able to work full-time and do my work in the evenings and in advance.

If it's high school, though, I don't know about it; but I'd say at least try it if your mom would allow. Or maybe you could ask her to at least check into it and check out the curriculum.

  2. I do online schooling. I find it much easier than regular home-schooling.

    1. You can call a REAL teacher to help you out.

    2. You can interact with other students.

    3. It takes much less time to do an assignment online than it is in real schools. It has much less delays, distractions, and problems.

    4. You can work at your own pace, and do work any time during the week.

    5. Your teachers always check in to make sure your doing good, and give you feedback as to why you did something wrong.

    6. The tests are graded automatically, and you can be half way through an entire course within 2 months.

    7. You dont have to spend loads of money on books.

    8. You can work on high grades, and finish a couple grades at a time.

    9. You could graduate 2 grades in less than a year.

If you want the online schooling I use, and a popular one, try Florida Virtual School. It has everything I listed above, and is free to all Floridians. They also have field trips. They have many options of classes, and you dont even have to take a full year of work. You can take just ONE class if you want.

Neither is really "better than the other". Its all how YOU see it, and if YOU like it.

If you want screenshots of the online school, let me know.

  3. Yes it is, its just a different form of homeschool. I do homeschool but out of books.

I don't think either one is beter, its what works for you. Honestly i think homeschool is rather tough as the work isn't 'fed' to you. you need to teach it to yourself and be self motivated. You need to be rather clever i think.

I think your mom is right with being strict about letting you 'try' it. Its a big change and there are a lot of factors. How old are u? Just choosing the curriculum is a huge step, if you want to go to varsity then you need a program that allows it. Feel free to ask me any questions you and your mom want to know. I've been through it all.

  4. It depends where you live!

In my country, No. Online schooling/correspondence courses etc are "distance education", not "homeschooling".

  5. no. homeschooling means your parents buy the books & teach you themselves. you have absolutly NO connection with a real school.

online schooling is, you're still part of a regular school even though you work from home. its just being a "cyber-correspondent"

i do not recommend it. being on the net, you can get easily distracted with games & other things & not get any work done. you should be a correspondent the old way, through snail mail.

now as far as beign a correspondent goes, wether cyber or regualr, its great. i did homeschool for grades 1 - 7 & then finished by working with fraser valley distances ed. school (im canadian to) if you're in bc, go there if you can. but try not to use online. the teachers are just a phonecall away (or you could probably email them) & they mail everythign to you & you just send it in as you do it.

now as to which is "better" thats personal opinion. both means you're at home. you dont "go" to a scool building.

in this sense, it doesnt matter which is which. its great working at home. you can finish earlier, have the rest of teh day off to do whatever the heck you want. lol

the dif is, do you REALLY want your mom to be your teacher as well as your mom? that was my problem. i HATED it! LOL constant nagging to get on with it. its good for you though, but its annoying lol the rest of "homeschooling" is fine.

now the other problem, concerning either way, is you dont have as much social life but this is easily fixed.

one is, since you have the day off, you can go out & play. when shcool is out, i used to go & meet the neighbors kids at the gate & we could hang out all afternoon.

also if you're in a church, you probably have a few friends there as well.

another way is being in an activity. i joiined a few groups that i did after my lessons, i had swimming lessons, piano lessons, did some martial arts a couple nights a week. i also have horse-riding lessons.

joining a group like this gets you "out there" & also could lead to a career. i want to be a show jumper some day so i stick with horse-riding.

both homeschool & corresponding was great (apart from having mom for a strict teacher lol) & i think its a lot better then a public school. im 27 now & i'd recommend either to anyone...just...try not to use the online stuff, unless you're REALLY REALLY REALLY......etc etc....either self-disiplined or have strict parents doing it for you.

    or both...lol

  6. If you are at home while accessing the online school, then you are home schooling.  The semantics depend upon the way you look at the opportunity.  As a homeschooler, we "school at home" using an online, virtual academy.  As members of a public charter school we register with them as Independent Study students that access our lessons and track attendance using the online school database.  Some high school distance learning schools utilize virtual classrooms and have group lectures and lessons using the internet, microphone/speakers, and a teacher's online white board.  Many college courses use the distance learning structure and would be the closest parallel to high school online schooling that I can think of.  You don't mention which state you are in...if in CA check out www.caliva.org, they have high school classes and use the k12 online curric.

  7. This is a topic that is one currently being debated within the homeschooling community.  My personal opinion is that though cyberschooling is school at home it is not "homeschooling"  but rather a form of distance learning administered by a third party (public school district, private corporation, private school).  Like the old style "correspondance school."

Here are some references for you to examine in looking at the different sides of the debate.

http://webpages.charter.net/reinhardt/re...  (a nicely written summary of cyberschooling and how it is viewed legally in Pennsylvania)

http://www.honestedu.org/essays/bernhoft... (I am not a Catholic, but this essay is well written and addresses the debate)

    http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art4...

http://www.homeschoolfreedom.org/odela3....  (traditional homeschoolers may see the dilution of this schooling option with cyberschools as a threat to "real" parent led homeschooling and simply as another option for distance education and delegation of the responsibility to their child's education)  --this is where I fit into the picture personally.

I think cyberschools and distance learning has a place in educational options that should be available because "one size does not fit all."  Not all children respond well to a particular kind of schooling just because we want them to.  These schools seem to be very well accepted by the "used to go to public school and now want another option" group of learners.
