Only 480p on a 1080p Up-converting DVD Player?

Hi,

I just got a Pioneer DV-410-V-K 1080p up-converting DVD player and I have it hooked up to component to my TV. When I play a DVD I am only getting 480p, when my TV supports up to 1080p. I tried a couple of different DVD and I am still only 480p. I know that component only supports up to 1080i. So I am wondering why for some reason I am only getting 480p not 720p or 1080i.

Thank You

  1. Simple answer...copy protection schemes on upconverting DVD players do not allow for upconversion of commercial media over component connections. You will need to connect via HDMI if you want to take advantage of the upconverting feature. This will be called out in your instruction manual if you read the fine print carefully.

  2. Make sure you are hooking up this DVD player with an HDMI cable and not the usual component cables.  This will make a large difference in picture quality.

  3. Your TV is perfectly capable of doing upconversion as well and it may actually do a better job than your DVD player (depends on the model).

So, no matter what is the output of your DVD player, the TV scales up to 1080p.

Finally, the player's output resolution has nothing to do with what DVD you play. Go to the DVD player's video setup and change the resolution to whatever you want.

  4. 480 is the resolution for analog (rca, svid)

    720 is for component

    1080 is for hdmi

now, this is a matter of upscaling, not upconversion

upconversion is a process of converting analog to digital signals

upscaling is from a lower resolution to a bigger ones (in your case 1080).

    anyhow,

on your player, make sure you check video output settings and set to auto (if it has). but if it doesn't have, call the manufacturer for special config. and also just to verify, check also the resolution settings of your tv, make sure it's set to auto...

    otherwise,

i'd have to suggest you use some audio/video receivers that does the upconversion such as onkyo tx-sr875, tx-sr905 (expensive tho), or eve tx-sr606 (but only does up to 1080i not p)
