  1. I lived in NC briefly about a decade ago, so I can answer at least some of your questions. While I was only there about 9 months ( I was working for an employer who didn't work out) I lived in the area to the south of Raleigh, near Southern Pines. This is BIG horse country- Southern Pines and the area just to the south of it are renowned for the large equestrian community located nearby. Normally, the only place in the state which sees a lot of snow is the western part, where the Smokey Mountains and National Park are located. That's also the home of Asheville and part of the Blue Ridge mountains, and it's far from where you'll be if you move to the Raleigh area. The area you are planning to move to has a long growing season and a relatively mild climate and winter- though it DOES GET very hot and humid in the summer. There is some snow in that area, but not much- it's just too warm most of the time. Also, the ground only rarely if ever freezes. Since NC is a coastal state, there is also the danger of hurricane activity- but since you are coming from Florida, you are already familiar with this. As far as your horses adjusting well, they should be just fine, especially since they are already used to a hot, humid climate for much of the year. NC has more of the same, so getting accustomed to it will be a piece of cake for them. I also would not be concerned about taking them back and forth to Florida for competitions, though with the price of gas being what it is, I am surprised you can afford this. The part of NC you want to move to is about 8 to 12 hours from Florida, depending on the route, traffic, and the weather conditions when you are traveling.

You will LOVE the Southern Pines area- it is marvelous horse country. There is a special place there called the Moss Foundation, which is a horselover's paradise- over 3,000 acres of prime Carolina pine forrest and timberland, set up exclusively for equestrian use. The only roads on the property are old logging trails, and they are closed to all traffic, with the exception of ambulances and horse drawn carriages and buggies. These woods are also loaded with natural trails and fences- this is the home territory of the Moore County Hounds, which is the local Hunt Club. I had the chance to ride the Foundation land when I was in NC, and I LOVED IT !!! You will too, I can guarantee you that. If you love to trail ride, you'll have a blast riding through these woods and on this land. It's beautiful. Wildlife of the type you are talking about is not a problem on the Foundation- you might see a deer or a fox, or perhaps a bobcat, but nothing more serious than that. I think the Carolina panther is extinct, so I wouldn't be concerned about encountering one of them, either. There are no wolves in NC, and the only bear country that I am aware of is in the northwestern mountains, near the Tennessee border. So I would relax about the wildlife issue. Besides, if you move to the area right near Raleigh, you won't have to worry about wildlife anyway- it's a major city, with large suburbs attached to it, like the communities of Apex and Cary.

To the south of Southern Pines, there is the community of Raeford, which is where the Carolina Horse Park is located- another huge and beautiful equestrian facility which you may have heard about. It's home to the Stoneybrook Steeplechase, the Southern Pines Horse Trials, as well as numerous other shows and competitions. Southern Pines itself is famous as the the major east coast home of the Eventing and Driving communities- the list of local residents who have international connections in those sports is rather lengthy, and includes such notable names as Denny Emerson in eventing, and the Faircloughs in the sport of Driving. There are also a number of show jumping people who make their home in that general area.

I can't answer the sales tax question- I have no idea what it is now. As far as the permit/license question goes, I think the minimum age for the first one is 15, and for driver's licenses, it is 16 or 17. Since I was already licensed before I went to work there, it's tough for me to know what the rules there are now.

I hope that helps you out.

  2. I live in Raleigh and my daughter rides. We board her horse at a nearby facility, so I feel I can answer your questions.

You can take driver's ed at 14 and a half. Get your permit at 15 and your provisional license at 16. There is a graduated licensing program for a year after that.

I don't think you will be going to Fl every other weekend from Raleigh. It is about an 8 hour drive. There are MANY lovely riding trails available around here.

Sales taxes vary by county. Here it is 6.75% on most things.

It does not snow very frequently, but when it has snowed, at times it has been a LOT. I have lived here for almost 18 years. One snowfall was 25" at one time!! WE have more ice than snowfalls because of the humid nature of the zone we live in.

There are NOT a lot of wild animals in the Raleigh area. It is quite metropolitan. It is a college town. Similar to Tallahassee in Fl, but larger.

  3. 1) i don't know exactly, but i'm sure it's around 16, look it up online.

    2) your horse will most likely be fine, north carolina is not a really harsh climate.

    3) Sure, why not? They would love the trail rides. Are they used to long drives?

    4) look it up

    5) parts of the state snow, and it get's cold in the winter.

    6) definitely no panthers, they live else where. There's probablly like coyotes and maybe mountain lions but I highly doubt you'll see a wolf or a bear that often

  4. sorry but for question 5 it dosen't snow in calafornia and it gets no snow in flordia

  5. 1) 15 for permit, 16 for license

    2) your horses will adjust just fine! the summers are very hot and we do have droughts, the winters are mild.

    3) don't see why not

    4) no clue

    5) in Raleigh Durham area it does not snow, there is frost and sometimes an ice storm, but nothing bad.

    6) no wild animals other than deer and squirrels to worry about

Best barns to board at are in Bahama/rougemont area.

  6. 1- Im  pretty sure you  must have take the drivers ed class and or have a permit or license in another  state. The classes here in NC  can  be  taken as  young as 14. And permit at  15 years of age. You will be required to  take the  test for a permit.  There are restrictions for 16 and  17  yr old to  hold a NC drivers license. Times, grades etc. If you are in High school and  do not hold passing grades the state can and will  take your  driver license til the  age of 18  or graduation.

2-I do not and have  never heard that a horse can not travel noradapt well to  climates.  Your horse should be  just fine  with the adjust.

3-I would think that traveling every other weekend  will not only  be tiresome for the horse but also for yourself.  You are looking at  any where fro 8-12 hours  traveling.

    4. NC sales tax will run you  6.75%

5-We get snow, but its the  snow we all  love.  Shuts  things down.  We  do not get alot of it, so when  we  get it most of us  are thrilled. As with any pet,  keep them  in  from the  harsh  cold and  also during the  extreme hot. NC  carries high humidity and  the summers are  more  brutal then the winters.

6-Raleigh ,  Its very much a city, and I have only been there a few times,  not the  Out  riding a  horse  down the  street area.

Im in the HighPoint /Triad area, but I would assume  even in Raleigh   you  will see possumns, porcpines,  and a few skunk. Panthers, and bear? Doubtful.  In the  rural area   of  where I am ,   wild  turkey,  deer, rabbits and fox.

trail  riding Id  be  more concerned  over a  couple  snakes than  bears and wild cats.

  7. You're being really mean, and barely any of these questions have to do with horses, so either ask in another section or look it up yourself!!

  8. Wow, your edits are pretty rude.

    1.  Google the NC DMV.

    2)  How the heck should we know?  My crystal ball isn't working today...

    3)  I think that is a question to ask your parents, and not us.

    4)  4.25%

    5)   If it snows, it will snow in the winter.  Google the NOAA site and look up Raleigh, NC for weather information.

    6)  Raleigh is a big, developed area - there are not any wild animals running around in it.
