Only for curiosity?

Why most of the teens play guitar or drums, but almost none of them pays piano/keyboard for pleasure (MOST teens play piano cuz their parents force them) and why do they always play rock. Why the freaking h**l isn't a single teen that plays double bass in Panama and what would you think if you saw a group of four teens (drummer, bass, piano, guitar) that play bebop and hard bop instead of the typical teen music (I have nothing against it, but it's true that most of teen bands play rock)

PD: I am an amateur jazz pianist, fan of Horace Silver and Thelonious Monk

  1. Teenagers want to play the music they know, and the only music they know is rock.  Most teenagers have never been exposed to classical or good jazz.  Rock is what they hear, so they think that's the only kind of music there is!  I used to play classical on my radio at work (in my office) and the other guys would call it 'elevator music'.

Tom Leher once said 'There is nothing on the radio these days but rock & roll and other kinds of children's music'.  I don't know if I'd classify it as 'children's music', but it is not a 'fine arts' form that takes some understanding, some learning about, like classical and classic jazz.  Rock is designed to be accessible to kids who haven't gotten any musical background from their parents.  One of the few things my parents did right was to bring me up with a love of classical music.

When I was in high school we had a trio there, piano bass and drums, that played stuff by Dave Bruebeck.   I loved listening to them practice!

  2. I play classical piano because I love it, although my parents had to force me into it at first. I also play guitar and drums because, well, it's a lot of fun, and easier than piano. In some ways, it's more expressive.

I read somewhere that young people TEND to appreciate music that is loud and fast. Of course, there are exceptions.

I wouldn't care what kind of music a teen band is playing, as long as they play it well :P
