Hi,

I've had my 2005 GS500F for 2 weeks now, and I'm already bored with it, when I bought it they said the 500cc engine would still make it scary at times, but it's just too soft. I took the BRC on a 250cc, and I can hardly tell the difference. Would a 600cc bike with in-line 4s make a big difference?

thanks

  1. I have owned big displacement bikes on down to lowly 125's. These days I derive my fun riding a 40 year old BSA single that on its best day might produce 23-24 HP. It's slow, vibrates and parts fall off as if on a whim. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

  2. You are missing something. It's like having s*x and only doing missionary. That bike should be fun to ride forever. You haven't been on the right roads with the right people.

Go to meetup.com and see if there are any riding groups in your area that ride twisties or other challenging courses.

    Give it a chance.

  3. get a 600 but take it easy or keep it for 6-12 months and get a 1k

  4. I once chased down a couple of CBR riders on My old 1980 Suzuki GS850G Shafty on a twisty road. I sure wasn't because My bike was faster. You haven't had the 500 long enough to get to know its power and handling characteristics yet, I have ridden with a Guy on One before and He had no trouble at all keeping up with the 750-1000 sized bikes.

  5. Try a 750.  Lots of juice.

  6. if you're bored with it, your not using it right

  7. The truth here is not what your going to want to hear..

But I will tell you anyway...

You cant ride the bike you have so getting a bigger one wont help..

I would put a good rider on a KR250R up against most of the riders on the street..  & the 250 would beat there 600R

the reason for this is the good rider would be at least 20 KPH faster through the corners..

So I would keep your GS500 for another 6 months & learn some road craft before you get a bigger bike,,

There is a reason that the GP riders start on 125cc  then go to 250cc then go to the big bikes,,,,  its so they know how to carry speed through corners,,

  8. Any s*****k can twist a throttle, true riding is zipping through corners. There's nothing more satisfying than whipping the GSXR spodes on a 88 barbie bike VTR250. My liter bike just gets ridden like an automatic, I never shift out of 6th gear down twistie roads even down to 35mph. Who cares about acceleration.

  9. You've got yourself jaded.

The GS500F is a great bike. More than enough power and great handling. If you find it boring either you don't know too much about riding and bikes or you're too timid.

But, that said, don't try to 'scare yourself. Find some good twisties and learn how to lean into the curves with your knee 1 inch above the pavement but without scraping the pegs.

I've owned a dozen bikes and currently have a Yamaha 1100, and an old 250 2-stroke. The 250 is faster off the line, and screams (literally) through the canyons. It is a trip to see traffic up ahead by looking under the car I'm about to pass. I don't get into it that much on the 1100, but it is also a killer ride.

Your riding the 500 as basic transportation. It''s a good bike like I say up above, but, well, "transportation" get boring after a while!

Have fun and keep the bike rubber side down.

  10. These other answers are on the money.  I have an 88 600 suzuki katana and have schooled many gixer 1000 and r1 dudes who can't ride.  On River Road in Richmond VA where i live, I have blown away newbies like you on big bikes.  At the end of the twisties, the stop and say what do you have?  Its all rider skill.

Keep riding your bike and gain skill.  Any moron can ride fast on the interstate.  Take your bike to the River Road in your area and see what you really have.  Hold your speed and get big balls.
