Lacks of points in the Premier League is a concern for the Black Cats manager despite the side improving after the removal of Steven Bruce.
Since taking over the charge from axed Steve Bruce, O’Neill has guided his side to 19 points from the available 27, easing relegation worries somewhat. The resounding 3-0 win over Norwich on Wednesday was the latest in a string of impressive results.
While the win has pushed Sunderland up to eighth spot on the table, O’Neill is not resting on his laurels, thinking ahead and planning for the future.
The manager highlighted the progress his side has made since his arrival, saying:
“I remember saying to you here way back some weeks ago, the first ambition of mine was to try to get level points from the number of games we had played.
"That was the first thought so it would give you a little bit of respite, you would need that on the board, and then eventually, you would look to go past that.
"We were able to achieve that and then obviously, the winning of the games gives the players the confidence and self-belief to go on.
"Winning football matches is the be all and end all."
