Question:

Only teaching people who want to learn, can it be done?

Hi all

I really enjoy learning and teaching languages and I'm just finishing off a languages degree. I'd consider/like to teach for at least a few years. Not only could I pass on my skills, but also continue to improve my own skills (hey, if you've got to teach someone else irregular verbs, you have to know them yourself!).

My problem with teaching is simple. I'd rather spend my time teaching and discovering more about the languages than asking people why they haven't done their homework etc etc.

Is there anywhere you can teach people who want to learn?!

(I understand you have to make lessons interessting to get the pupils' attention etc, but there are some pupils out there that have 100% no interest in going to school, let alone in learning irregular German verbs! If I wanted to tell people off I'd train as a policeman....)

Any suggestions welcome

(PS. I've been working at school on a placement for 8 months, I've seen what some pupils/classes are like!)

  1. "Is there anywhere you can teach people who want to learn?!"

Well, to answer that question, there are only a few places i can think of where students are actually there because they want to be and not because they have to be.

    1)  The Prison system-- here education is a privilege.  Those who mess up are out.  Plain and simple... no ifs, ands or buts.

    2)  College or University.  You would still have those who didn't hand in homework but unlike elementary/Jr HS/HS, if they don't do it you can fail them.  No NCLB (No Child Left Behind) laws for College/University as far as I know.

    3) Adult School.  Most who are there are there because they want to complete something they didn't/weren't able to when they were younger.

  2. If you teach at a language academy where people

A.) Don't receive grades or a diploma and aren't being pressured by parents or others to be there

    and

B.) Pay money to be there

They probably really want to learn the language.  Look into Berlitz.
