Ons Jabeur and Monica Puig advance to the title match of Girls’ Singles – French Open 2011
Ons Jabeur beats Caroline Garcia 6-2, 1-6, 6-2
Tunisian Ons Jabeur survived a scare in the second set to rally past Caroline Garcia of France in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 in the semi-finals of girls’ singles event of French Open, Roland Garros in Paris on Friday. The match lasted
for an hour and 29 minutes.
Garcia drew the first blood as she broke the Tunisian in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. After that, it was all Jabeur show as she bagged six successive games, breaking her opponent three times to win the set 6-2. The Tunisian
delivered 67 percent of the first serves and won 55 percent of the points on them in the first set.
The French bounced back in the second set, breaking the Tunisian twice and allowing her to win just a single game to grab the set 6-1. Garcia converted two of the four break points she received and saved all the three break points
she faced in the second set.
Jabeur did not lose hope after the second set thrashing. She convincingly held her serve in the opening game to shift the momentum on her side and took a 1-0 lead. The Tunisian broke her opponent in the second game, taking a 2-0
lead. After that, it looked like a competition of breaking serves had started as five of the next six service games were broken. However, it was Jabeur who clinched the decisive break, winning the set 6-2.
The Tunisian is slated to take on Monica Puig of Puerto Rico in the title match.
Monica Puig defeats Irina Khromacheva 6-3, 1-6, 7-5
Fifth seed Monica Puig of Puerto Rico came back strong after the second set drubbing to overpower Russian Irina Khromacheva, seeded second at the event, in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 in the semi-finals.
Puig broke Khromacheva in the eight game of the first set, winning it 6-3. The Puerto Rican hit a single ace and 65 percent of the first deliveries, bagging 70 percent of the points on them in the first set. Puig converted three
of the six break points on Khromacheva’s serve and saved one of the three break points on her own serve in the opening set.
In the second set, Khromacheva crushed her opponent as she lost just a single game, breaking Puig twice and winning the set 6-1. The Russian had a low first serve percentage as she managed to deliver just 40 percent of the first
serves in the second set.
After losing the second set abysmally, Puig kept on fighting and finally broke Khromacheva in the twelfth game of the final set to win it 7-5 in 72 minutes. The Puerto Rican needed a total of two hours and nineteen minutes to oust
her opponent in a marathon match.
