Question:

Oops! Shutter speed?

Hi there, I've just bought a new Samsung camera and going through all the options I kinda fiddled with the shutter speed. I'm not sure what it was originally? This is my first digital camera and it could be anything! I wanted to know what the default shutter speed on most digital cameras was? My options range from 1/2000 of a second to 30 seconds! I have no idea what it was originally but I'd like to reset it back to default. If anyone has any clue (cos I clearly don't!) I'd be very grateful! :-)

  1. Agreeing with above, you can also go into the menu mode and reset everything to the original specs.

  2. Well, I don't know what it was originally set on, but if you don't really plan on changing it then 1/125 is a pretty good shutter speed to keep it on, but you'll have to adjust the aperture to meet the needs of the shutter speed.

I think it would be good for you to play with the shutter speeds and change them often though so you can learn what they do, otherwise your hard earned money to buy that expensive camera is pretty much wasted... a slow shutter speed will blur motion, a fast one will freeze motion.

  3. Borrow a book from your local library on basic photography. Specifically shutter speeds and apertures. Then you'll be able to take full advantage of settings from 30 seconds to 1/2000 of a second. Outside on sunny day shutter speed on 1/125 or 1/250 should be fine. Or just leave on auto, but you learn nothing that way.

  4. If you set your camera on "auto"  it will automatically set the shutter speed for each picture, depending on lighting.  It will be different for every shot.  If you set your camera on "S", which is shutter priority, you will have to set the speed yourself.  Check your book to see how to do that.  If you have a "P" setting, it is "program", and the camera will set the speed to the correct one.
