Open Championships 2010: Rory McIlroy lost battle at St Andrews due to bad weather
Rory McIlroy is not disappointed regarding the Friday’s round that finished at 80, ruining his chances of winning the Open championship at Old Course St Andrews.
The journey from hero to zero started with pleasant weather, accompanied by strong winds ending in snatching the victory from the world’s number 9th.
Rory McIlroy kicked off with a very good start with an opening score of 63. It equalled the lowest score round in any major but then he got stuck in the worst weather ever and lost the battle against the torrent winds.
Rory McIlroy, although recovered very fast and impressively in the 3rd and the 4th round with a score of 69 and 68 respectively. He carded an overall score of eight-under total of 280 and ended in sharing the third position with 2 other players, Henrik Stenson and Paul Casey.
The 21 year old Irish accepts that even if he omitted the dirty mark of 80 from his scorecard, he won’t have been able to catch the champion Louis Oosthuizen. No doubt, Louis played like a winner. Rory McIlroy believes that one bad round can not overshadow his overall performance at the opens.
He believes he is not going to have nightmares regarding the defeat. After all he gave his best, even in the challenging weather conditions those prevailing on Friday at St Andrews.
Rory McIlroy said ,"I'm sure I'll wake up in the morning and just look at the fact I was 16 under for three rounds of golf around St Andrews in the Open, and had just one bad round - it's perfectly fine”
Rory McIlroy says he could not help but thinking of going up the last hole and hanging on there for a little longer. If he had held it together, it would have been a different story by now.
Other than the 2nd round which did not go well for Rory McIlroy, rest three rounds turned out to be pretty good. He scored a bogey less, 7 birdies and 1 eagle in the 1st round. The 3rd round had 6 birdies, 1 bogey and one double bogey .The last one was even better with one bogey and 5 birdies. After shooting that drastic 80, he came back well, by making 8 under the par.
Rory McIlroy was all determined and keen on focusing on the things he did well at the originating house of Golf (Scotland). Rest who can control the weather? So a very little can be done about it. Every player knows that the real challenge of golf is on the old Course. A lot of learning can take place from that one week.
He said that he knew what he had was an excellent opportunity and it was a tremendous pleasure for being there with the world’s best players and worst conditions.
Despite all this self motivation, Rory McIlroy is still a bit disappointed as he knows that if he had comparatively better conditions on Friday, he would have been a lot closer to the lead. He might not have been the winner or -17 under but he would have definitely contended for the 2nd position.
This reaction of the 21 year old is perfectly normal after shooting 63 in the first round. With a score like that in any golf tournament, a player starts to fancy the chances of winning the upcoming rounds as well.
Rory McIlroy can use all the self motivation therapies in the world, but the fact remains that only if the weather was on his side, McIlroy would have written a new history after Tiger Woods. Rory McIlroy should not worry, after all, he is only 21 years old of age and has a long cherishing life ahead to make new stories and set a charismatic history. In the end, it is not easy to defeat the Old Course itself.
