Open Fire?? How do i check?

My landlady has told me the chimney is "unlined" Do i need it to be lined in order to have an open fire??

  1. No, it doesn'tt need to be lined for an open fire, only if you were fitting a gas fire, then you would need a stainless steel liner such as Kopex or other manufacturer. As others have said, sweeping is essential.


  2. yes i would have it lined if its not already this can be an aluminium tube that is fitted inside the chimney but you can check it by way of lighting a piece of paper or a match and when it goes out hold it six inches from the fire opening and if it draws the smoke up the chimney it should be good to use but if you are not sure get it checked by a pro

  3. Liner are made out of clay. Many old houses dont have lined chimnies this is not a problem but just make sure you have it swept once a year to prevent soot build up and bird nest up there. doing this will prevent the dredded chimney fire.
