How does OpenOffice.org compare to Office 2007 for Windows in your opinion. Also, would OpenOffice.org only work on a computer running an Intel processor?

  1. I like Office.  Free is never free.

  2. OpenOffice.org essentially just works for what it does. It has bugs, but so does Microsoft Office.

Some things that bother some Microsoft Office users about OpenOffice.org are that OpenOffice.org lacks an outline mode, lacks a built-in grammar checker, has minimal bibliography support, doesn’t support continuing music files throughout the presentation in Impress, and its database called Base, it really not up to Microsoft’s Access.

But on the other hand, Microsoft Office, at least when I last checked with Office 2003, still didn't properly support mail merges over about 1,000 records (it tends to jump back to the beginning of the file), still didn’t support master documents properly, and was still just as clumsy as ever in converting Ecel files to .DBF files, something that is very, very important in the department I work for. OpenOffice.org has always handled this perfectly. And there are free add-ons that handle some of the perceived defects,

Attempting to compare similar products again and again comes across the same problem of different people finding different things to be important to them. For example, if using styles is important to you in your word processor, I think you will find that OpenOffice.org is much better than Microsoft Word.

Probably most people would find Microsoft Office to be somewhat better, but is it enough better to justify the cost? That depends on what you are doing and how much the difference in cost matters to you.

Microsoft Word runs in one version on Windows and on Linux systems under Wine which is free Microsoft Windows emulator. It runs in another version on the Macintosh.

OpenOffice.org comes in a Windows version, a Macintosh version, a Linux version, and some other versions, such as the Solaris Unix version. Also various Linux distros provide modified versions of the Linux version, which seem very often to work less well than the standard vanilla Linux version. For standard versions see http://download.openoffice.org/other.htm... .

In short, Intel or non-Intel shouldn’t be a particular issue with either product, unless a particular feature you want isn’t available in the versions for the non-Intel machine. Also users of both products tend at times to mention rather casually that they are using the products on an AMD machine.

  3. You can do the same on both, 100% compatible with each other and openoffice is FREE (whats not to like). Type of processor would have no bearing on openoffice working or not, it will work equally well on either.

  4. both gives you almost the same function but 2007 is a great software which simplify works for you. the navigation bar is much neater and there's a lot of function. yeah, it might be a bit tricky to use it for the first time, but you'll get along... i love powerpoint 2007 the most! it's very easy to set up a presentation as everything is on the navigation bar. you dont have to open a drop-down menu anymore.

regarding on the processor issue... i'm not quite sure bout it... from what i've learn, usually people check the compatibility with their operating system, not their processor... anybody wanna correct me with this? i would like to know.... maybe i doze off in my pc technical class... lol...
