Micheel added, “I had a terrific start with four birdies on my first six holes. I think the key was I kept the ball in play, made a couple of nice putts, and I made all my short putts. My iron play was good and I just managed myself well and gave myself
a lot of opportunities. Outside my bogey in the last, I’m extremely pleased. I made 8 birdies, it felt great, it really did. I’m ready to play tomorrow in the same conditions, I do enjoy playing in difficult conditions”.
For the moment, Micheel will be hoping to win the Open de Espana title in order to reinvent his former blistering form.
The Abu Dhabi HSBC Champion, Englishman Robert Rock also carded a splendid opening round of four-under, 68 to finish one stroke behind the leader Micheel and is now poised at number two alongside Jorge Campillo and countryman Danny Willett.
Rock who surged to stardom earlier in the current season after taking over raging Tiger Woods for his second European Tour victory.
He has been hoping to bag another title before heading in the thick of the summers in order to strengthen his position on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Rock suffered a few misadventures during the day when he dropped consecutive shots on par- three, 3rd and par-four, 4th on the front nine, but played well through the opening nine holes to compensate for the loss.
He carded four birdies on the front and made the turn for a whirlwind back nine.
The Englishman is poised at number 60th on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and needs to pull in a strong finish in order to qualify for the US Open in June.
Pulling in an eagle at par-five, 13th, Rock fell for a disastrous double-bogey six on par-four, 14th. He pulled in another eagle at par-five, 16th to finish for four-under, 68.
Spaniard Campillo also broke into contention on the opening day when he pulled in magical four-under, 68 to challenge the rest of the field for the title.
Campillo opened up with a birdie on the first hole on the front and made the turn with a strong four birdies on the card.
