Spanish tennis ace Tommy Robredo ousted Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan to make his way into the quarterfinal round of the Open de Moselle tennis tournament in a total of two sets on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2.
As a result of this victory, the seventh seeded Spaniard will now take on fourth seeded Richard Gasquet in Metz. Richard on the other hand reached the quarters of the Open de Moselle after getting the better of Paul-Henri Mathieu in a three setter clash. The final match score was 4-6, 7-6 (5) and 7-6 (3).
Tommy who triumphed in the indoor championships back in 2007 fired a total of six aces and broke his opponent’s serve on two occasions in every set. Richard on the other hand powered a total of seventeen aces in his victory.
The sixth seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber also progressed to the quarters after dismissing Michael Berrer in a two setter all German clash. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2. He will now meet either Lukas Lacko or Marin Cilic.
Philipp broke Michael’s serve during the start of the second set and prevented a break point in the third game of the second set to grab a 3-0 lead. He sealed victory on his first match point as Michael lost his serve again.
Last year’s winner Gael Monfils from France pulled out of the championship on Wednesday night as a result of his abdominal injury. The second seeded Gaels had been scheduled to contest in the round two on Thursday. The player will be replaced by Nicolas Mahut from France.
In an earlier opening round clash, 2003 winner Arnaud Clement was defeated by Lacko in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2.
Arnaud led 4-1 in the match but lost his next nine games to lose the set in the end. Lacko served out the clash after Arnaud, who is also a member of the Davis Cup team from France, prevented a total of two match points.
Kristof Vliegen from Belgium and qualifier Igor Sijsling from Netherlands also won their respective first round matches.
Kristof knocked down Federico Del Bonis from Argentina in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 whereas Igor eliminated Thierry Ascione, a French wild card entrant in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4.
In other action in Bucharest, last year’s winner Albert Montanes made a successful start to his BCR Open campaign with a straight set win over Tobias Kamke. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4. The Spaniard tennis ace was later joined by Juan Ignacio Chela, who has also reached the quarters in straight sets.
The top seeded Montanes secured a safe path into the quarterfinal round of the BCR Open tennis tournament after getting the better of Tobias Kamke on Wednesday. The world number 22 held a total of nine service games in a match that concluded after a time period of 83 minutes in Bucharest. The German tennis player struggled on his serve and thus failed to make more than 40% of his opening serves.
Montanes, as a result of this victory, will now play eighth seeded Jeremy Chardy for a semi-final berth. The French player made his way into the quarters after dispatching off Simone Vagnozzi in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-4.
Juan Ignacio Chela defeated Simon Greul in a two setter clash on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-0. The fourth seeded Juan advanced to a straight-set victory over his German tennis foe, Simon Greul in just 50 minutes in Bucharest.
Chela as a result of this victory will meet Bjorn Phau in the quarters. The German brushed aside Adrian Ungur in the second round with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
