Question:

Open enrollment insurance question?

I am getting married in Nov. to a police detective and his open enrollment for adding me to his policies is in Jan. However we just found out I am 6 weeks pregnant, my questions are these....is there any other way to be added before then to his insurance? And if not I have no problem doing the Texas pregnancy medicaid thing but does that count against him, like in taking money from his checks, to reimburse the govt? And since I will be like 6 and a half months in Jan. is it possible they would deny adding me to his insurance calling pregnancy a pre exsisting condition? I mention he is a cop because in my mind maybe they are less strict on the guidelines and more apt to help since he is a public servant so to speak, but then this is a huge insurance conglomerate and the govt. we are talking about....any viable responses greatly appreciated.

  1. How about calling the Insurance Company he uses and asking them?

I have a public servent for a spouse as well but I wasn't  ever in your shoes. I would call whomever it is that the Dept. uses for their coverage and consult with them.

  2. Congratulations!

Getting married is a "qualified event," so your husband can add you to his  group insurance effective on the first day of the month after the wedding. Start the paperwork sooner though. I think Texas is a common law state, and if it is, you can declare your selves married with a simple form he can get from his HR manager, and get on his insurance now.

Federal law mandates that pregnancy cannot be a pre-existing condition, however insurance companies can impose waiting periods for maternity coverage. Here you're gonna have to check with his insurance company.

Below is a link to the text of the laws.

  3. Once you get married, THAT is a qualifying event, to add you on before open enrollment.   You could go ahead and get married next week, if you want to.

They can't consider your pregnancy a pre-existing condition.  But, his plan might not have maternity benefits on it.

  4. Most companys MUST allow you to be added, effective date of marriage which is called "change of status".

Same as with a newborn. They are added to a policy effective date of birth.

Push for your addition as of date of marriage!

  5. I don't think you can be added before you are married....however, you should be able to be added in November once you are married. I believe major life changes (marriage, divorce, birth of a child, adoption, etc.) allow you to do so outside of open enrollment. Have him talk to his HR department.

I also don't think that pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition so you shouldn't be denied. Again, ask the HR dept. or call the insurance company for more information.

    Congrats!
