Opening Day game rescheduled: Cincinnati Red to play Miami Marlins on April 5 – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds were granted the schedule change by Major League Baseball for Opening Day on Tuesday, November 15. Previously slated to be played on April 6, the Opening Day game of 2012 against the Miami Marlins will now be played on April 5.
As the details started pouring in, it was brought to fore that April 6 was Good Friday. As the main sponsor of the Cincinnati Reds for Opening Day Parade is Findlay Market Association, the latter had other engagements set.
The news, obviously, came as a relief to the Cincinnati Reds’ CEO Bob Castellini. It is worthwhile to mention that Good Friday is famous for being one of the busiest shopping days of the whole year for Findlay Market.
Were the game to go on as scheduled, Findlay Market would have to shut down their business to hold the parade. Secondly, Miami Marlins also extended the cooperation that the Cincinnati Reds needed.
That is what the CEO acknowledged while speaking to the reporters on Tuesday, thanking Major League Baseball, the MLB Players Association and the Reds and Marlins players for the move.
"We want to thank Major League Baseball, the MLB Players Association and the Reds and Marlins players for agreeing to move Opening Day to Thursday, April 5," Reds’ CEO Bob Castellini said. "Opening Day is a long tradition for this team, our fans and the city
of Cincinnati and we are pleased that the parade and game will now be on Thursday."
The parade chairman also spoke on the occasion. "The Findlay Market Association is once again proud to be the sponsor of the Opening Day Parade," said Neil Luken, the parade chairman for Findlay Market.
Also, the Miami Marlins have their game scheduled for April 4 against the St. Louis Cardinals, the current World Series Champions. The Miami players will now have to travel to Cincinnati to play the game rescheduled by the MLB.
The Cincinnati Reds have a long-standing tradition of having held the Opening Day parade and the coming year will see the ceremonial holiday on April 5 in Cincinnati.
