Opening a pewter flask?

I just bought a new Mullingar pewter flask but it seems like the top is stuck. I've tried using WD-40 to lubricate it but it still is unmoving. My friend suggested using pliers but I think that that would scratch the pewter. Any suggestions?

well you cant use it unscatched and unopened, so Id get the dam pliers out and start turing the lid.

run it under hot water it makes it open easier
