Opening files via Command Prompt?

Question

I am aware of creating files through command prompt, but is it possible to open and edit these files also through the command prompt? If so, what is the command to do this?

C:\>edit file.txt

Edit is a DOS program. Just substitute the file you want to open for "file.txt"

I am assuming you are using Windows of some type. You can use a program called "edit" in most DOS command prompts to edit most text files. Try typing "edit" at the command prompt.

If you happen to be using UNIX or LINUX (which is unlikely considering that you are asking a question like this) you can type "vi" or "emacs" to edit text files.

There are some programs out there that edit other types of files at command prompts but they are cumbersome.

usually you open the file using notepad or wordpad, edit it there, and save then close it.
