  1. Perhaps you are meaning to ask something else?

The "Operating System" is the framework that all other application that run on the system must rely on.  Think of the Operating System as the foundation and your word processing software as the roof.  Without the foundation the roof won't work.

At the lowest level, a computer has a clock ran by a battery with a physical chip called CMOS.  This CMOS chip will typically contain very low level (means it does not do much) software called BIOS.  When you turn the computer on, what actually happens is this BIOS comes to life and checks the physical state of the actual hardware.  This is the part when you turn your compute on and the screen is black with a bunch of numbers and words that go by real quick.  Then, the BIOS hands off to...drum roll please...the operating system.

Without an OS, you are stuck like chuck looking at BIOS with little functionality to do any work.

  2. they dont benefit us first and foremost lmaoooorf

but, they do benefit ur computer !!!

as with out an OS or DOS / unix etc, they aint exactly

    workable are they.

u wont get much for it @ a scrap yard lol

so go buy yasen an OS

  3. Um, well pretty much everything is built upon the operating system.  Language and fonts are generally inherited from the OS, though others can be added.  Essentially, it manages communication of all the code from the programs you use, like internet explorer, to your hardware.   A lot is built into the modern OS, including the functions like dhcp, which is used for network accessibility.  So, the immediate impact on the user is the relative vulnerability and capabilities of the various systems.  Linux may be more secure, but it also may not be compatible with the software you want to use.

  4. Without it, we would have no way to work.  There would be no applications, no Graphic User Interfaces, not even a command line.  It provides the base that all other programs can run on.
