Question:

Operation on my jaw

Hello all, a couple of weeks ago I had an appointment at the dentist, and I got some rather bad news.

Basically, this is what happened.

3 years ago (I'm 17 at the moment) I went and had a mould taken, and was told to wait and see if my jaw formed, and they would get in touch or keep us informed and what was happening.

Turns out, my dentist retired, and left all the files to rot, meaning that I was basically left in the dark.

So my mum got fed up, and decided to get an a appointment.

Now I've been told that not only do I have overcrowding (Which I was expecting anyway), but my bottom jaw hasn't formed properly.

So they are recommending that I have an operation in which they will break my jaw, move it forward and pin it or something like that.

Was just wondering if anybody here has first hand experience or anything and is willing to share some info.

How long the recovery period is, how painful it is etc.

Thank you alot for reading, have a great night!

  1. should have got treated earlier when the jaw was forming by pulling it forward by some functional appliances. If its really bad, there is no problem going in orthgnatic surgery. You Have to be on liquid diet for 2-4 weeks. Painful but get good results.

  2. orthognathic surgery is not fun.  Never had it but I've done it.  It is usually the last option when nothing else will work.  Healing time is variable but in the long run the result is what matters.

Pain goes away with time, a beautiful smile can last a lifetime.
