I bought a computer about a year ago. I set it up and put in a password. Now I am coming back and realize I need to use it now (I was using a different computer, but it broke). I have tried many different programs the main one being Ophcrack. I have read many excellent reviews on this program. One problem.... It doesn't work!

I have succesfully downloaded the ISO image to a disc and I have changed the BOOT order. When I turn on the computer the correct window appears and Ophcrack begins to work. A large list of operations fall down and then a window pops up. In the guides it mentions that there is one "partition" that "contains hashes". The example partition being:

/mnt/hda1/WINDOWS/system32/config

However when I run the program two partitions containing hashes appear:

0. /mnt/sda2/Windows/System32/config

1. /mnt/sda3/Windows/System32/config

The program asks me to select which one I would like to crack passwords from. There is no mouse icon that appears on the screen. The question I have is how do I select a partition? I assume that I select the partition by typing it in a pressing ENTER.

Yet everytime I do:

  1. OPHcrack is probably overkill in your case. You probably don't really care what the password was, so you don't need to access it silently.

    The program at http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/b...

allows you to re-set the password.

A similar approach (resetting the password) is possible for XP as shown at
