  1. fiber optic cables?  They are expensive, but require less maintinence and will not break


  2. Because they can transport information MUCH (over hundred times) faster than copper wires. They allow for the increasing amount of people on the internet to be accommodated for.

  3. They are impervious to magnetic interference!!! Geez comon you guys. They are highly flexible and last almost forever. They last so long you might as well say forever. The additional data bandwidth available because of the use of light allows for greater and faster applications such as movie viewing, data transfer, fax and voice to be delivered to everyone. Plus they can be used in many medical applications for viewing inside the body.

  4. because they are the only form of data communication that travels at the speed of light ( nothing can ever go faster than the speed of light ) So it is the highest form of mass communication available. normal transfer speed of non-optical media is significantly longer in times
