What do you mean by a modern family?  Just here in the US, where I am, "family" takes on many, many different ones.  There's the so-called "traditional" nuclear family, which really only had prominence during the 1950s.  There are single-parent households, childless households, extended families living together, orone or two grandparents raising their grandkids, among others.  There are also close-knit groups of friends who live together and would consider each other family.

By traditional family, do you mean the true Western tradition of extended families living with or near each other, or the false, recent one of nuclear families? And do you want to know which one is "best"?   I think that entirely depends on the group involved.  Sometimes it's best not to have the mom or dad around, sometimes it's best to have aunts and uncles there, too.  Some people don't want kids.  Some people have to let others raise their kids.  I don't think people today are more selfish than previous generations at all.  I think we just have more options, so that everyone can find what best suits them, rather than everyone trying to fit into one definition.

As is often the case you have not given enough information and therefore people will make of this question what they will.  What culture?  Who is representing the modern family?  My family versus the Osbournes versus the family on the first season of 'The Simple Life' are all modern but are vastly different.  What about in South America?  Uzbekistan, Egypt, Israel, Russia, China, France, all very different but all equally modern.  Now how about 'traditional'?  Define traditional.  That is like trying to define normal.  What is a traditional Taiwanese family?  Argentinian?  American?  Do you mean white American, Native American?  Do you include Inuit? Aztec? Some Mayan peoples still live much the way they did at Spanish contact.  Are these considered traditional or modern?

Traditionally, in almost all cultures, families did not consist of only two parents and children in a home or dwelling.  Families were extended and included grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and others in a community.  In villages, the entire population might have a hand in raising young ones.  All the kids in a village congregated in "daycare" and were often looked after by older members of the group.  In matrilineal societies it was often the uncle who played the role of father.  Modern families often lack this dynamic, and I think that is a shame.

The "modern" family?  Too "modern", each going his/her/its own way and forgetting what is really important in life!  There are too many distractions; not enough time to do what everyone wants; people need to learn the "One Minute Mangager" routine.
