Question:

Opinion on one-syllable names

Do you consider the number of syllables when naming your children? I notice that I tend to gravitate toward two-syllable names, but maybe that is because they are the most common. Three-syllable names seem acceptable to me, but for some reason one-syllable names (like Cole and Pierce) seem like I have to warm up to them more as opposed to two-syllable names (like Gavin and Austin). How do you feel about one-syllable names? And if you have a one-syllable name, do you like it or feel like it is too abbreviated? Thanks for your input!

  1. I think it depends on how many syllables are in the last name. My name is Amy Caitlyn (both 2 syllables) and my last name has 1 syllable.

It sort of even it out. Get it? Like, if you had all of the names three syllable it would be long and sort of complicated?

  2. I think it depends in great part on how long your last name is.  There needs to be flow between the names.

  3. when i had my son, i really wanted to name him luke, but, thought it kind of inappropriate, so i named him lucas, i just couln't see them at gradulation saying luke, come up here. i have a 4 syllable name, which is fine, my daughter marianna has 4 , and i love her name.

  4. I like two or three syllable names for first names best too.  One syllable names are ok, but like you said it takes me longer to warm up to the name.  I like one syllable names for middle names.  I like the flow of two or three syllable followed by one.

  5. I think if you are going with a one syllable name, it better pack a punch, otherwise they can be dull.

  6. I think it just depends on the name for me. If it's a 1 syllable first name I like it with a 2 or 3 syllable middle name. But 2 or 3 syllable 1st names sound fine to me with either 1, 2 or 3 syllables names... if that makes sense.  But i do tend to like 2 syllable names better too. My top 3 boy's names are Jaxon Pierce (My son), Greyson Beckett, Lincoln Grant... Top 3 Girls are Kenzington Presley, Harper Reese, Marley Dai.

    Good Luck & God Bless!

  7. I know somebody named Ann and someone named Kate and someone name Josh and someone named Hal

someone named Lynn and Lee and Jay and May and somebody named Jane. All one syllables!

  8. i bounce all over the place w/syllables.

sometimes i pair two 1 syllable names together like:

    Leif James/Claire Rose

    sometimes 2 syllables together like:

    Lucas Henry/Emma Peyton

    or 3 syllables together like:

    Nathaniel Benjamin/Gabriella Katherine

    i mix and match two, 1/2, 3/1, 3/2, or even 4/1, 4/2....etc.

i base it on how the names flow to me more so than syllables. and...my last name has 2 syllables so it's a nice even platform to work with.

    oh forgot the last question...

my name is Jennifer - 3 syllables.

but i prefer to go by Jae- 1 syllable...so i LIKE that it's short and sweet. i dislike my first name. not because it has 3 syllables but because it's so darn common! lol

  9. I have felt frustration over my 2 syllable name

When my first child came along, I gave him a 1 syllable name....which he purposed to legally lengthen to the traditional 3 syllable version.

    Greg   -   Gregory

  10. i had never really noticed it before now...

when i think about it... i like name with more syllables also!

  11. Actually, the majority of the names I love are three or four syllables. Interesting!

One syllable names I think are nice. there are not very many of them, so it is hard to get an overall opinion. A lot of one syllable names like Grace Hope and Faith are used as middle names way too often. I think we should give these names a break as first names!

I don't have a one syllable first name, but I do have a one syllable nickname. And do you know what I've decided recently..I hate the nickname Liz! lol!!! Isn't that funny? I think it sounds...I don't know, masculine? Everybody tells me Liz is a very chic nickname. I would agree somewhat (example, Liz Claiborne) but I just don't like it anymore. If I could change my nickname, I'd choose Elle now, but I can't. I've lived on this planet for twenty years and everybody knows me as Liz! haha

So, thats my story as a 4 syllabler living with a 1 syllable nickname!

  12. I dont care about the syllables its just if i like the name....thats what i care about .............. haha

One syllable names are fine though. I dont see anything wrong with them....i love the name CADE!!!!!! (blake is good too)

and Cade is a one syllable name.........for a girl i like Rae, Brooke, Brynn, Claire, Faith, Joyce, Kate, Quinn, Paige, and Sage !

    :D Soo yeah.

  13. I have a three syllable name, Zalika.  I never really thought about syllables, but now that you mention it I probably would lol.  I've noticed that a lot of one syllable names tend to be used as middle names because they "fill" a name, and that really annoys me.  Rose, Grace, Mark, Lynn, Cole, John, etc. all seem to be common as middle names.  Then again, so are two syllable names.

I dunno, I guess it doesn't really matter.  My daughters both have two syllable names (Kristan and Jarzi) and I've only realised that fact now that you mentioned it. XD

  14. I hadn't really noticed it before but I tend to like 2-syllable first names with 1-syllable middle names. I think 3-syllables are okay but there aren't very many that I like.

  15. I tend to like three syllable names (Elizabeth, Eliana, Madelie, Julian) but I also like one syllable names (Kate, Mae, Saul). I'm not big on two syllable names though. Odd too think about. Good question, though.
