Question:

Opinions Please: Should I buy a new camera or not?

A few months ago at a concert i accidentally dropped my camera which dented in the lense on my Canon A 570 IS camera. I was able to pop the lense back in place. Everything works well accept when it 'digitally zooms' past 4.0x. Anything taken after that becomes white. Hubby and I are going to England and he thinks we should buy a new camera since it won't zoom well past 4.0x. My argument is well doesn't digital zoom make the picture quality worse? he wants to zoom up closer on things....but can't u just take a normal pic w/ higher resolution and just crop it on the computer? Ur opinions please!! Thank u!

  1. Hi Ashley,

Truly,  your best bet is to buy a new camera...(especially if hubby is up with it)... because even though the only thing you see wrong with your camera is the zoom....  that may not be the only problem and for sure, it will show up, once you get to where you are REALLY wanting the pictures to come out.   Besides, you don't want to be on the other side of ''I TOLD YOU WE SHOULD HAVE  BOUGHT A NEW CAMERA"  the whole time you are on your trip and afterwards when you get home.    One of the things that can happen is that your zoom will begin to cause pictures that are not in perfect focus at a large size.  Small in the viewfinder and on the computer is one thing... but once the pictures are at print quality, they can be virtually out of focus... and you don't want that.

I suggest you do shop around for a new camera but if you are really in love with the camera you have,  you can also take it in to a camera repair and have them evaluate the damage  and give you an estimate of the repairs...  then you know if it is in good working order or if it is not cost effective to have fixed.

    Thanks for reading.

    Happy Vacation :))

  2. If your camera breaks down completely while you are away (and it might do!), and you can't take photos, you'll have 2 choices, go home with no record of your trip, or alternatively buy a camera in England, which I can almost guarantee will cost you a great deal more than (I'm guessing) the US.

I'd get one before you go away. You can always keep your old one as a spare or sell it as "partially operating" to help fund your new purchase.

  3. Whatever you do don't buy it at one of these:

  4. Well for my purposes i would get a new camera because sometimes there will be a subject that will be a once in a lifetime shot and you might be o far away.  And if you crop at a high resolution depends how far away the subject is if it is far it will become pixelated(can see pixels) but if closer up it will look fine.
