They made the correct decision for them.  Some people just do not want children.

I would not have lied about it though.

I think it's their decision. I'd much rather have someone do that than get pregnant and end up aborting babies or mistreating children they never wanted. If they change their minds and decide they want children they can always adopt! But what business is it of anybody except the bride and groom?

What the husband and wife want to discuss/not discuss with people about their reproductive status should be their business and concern, not yours.

Sounds like he discussed it with the person who counted:  his wife to be.  The two of them are the only ones who matter in this equation.
