My opinion is that the same amount or more people will still die from diseases and viruses without stem cell research.

  1. As a human , we have to find out how to improve our life. Stem cell research helps human to lead a better life. Sorry to not have the same opinion as you. I think stem cell research is good..

  2. As a future doctor i believe that stem cells pave the future of treatments for diseases that otherwise have not been cured. Ethical issues such as "playing with life" from embyros can be overcome as there are stem cells in the placenta (afterbirth)

  3. My life has been saved by stem cells.  I am a leukemia patient, and went through a stem cell transplant last year, am now leukemia free.

Stem cell transplant is the medically correct term for bone marrow transplants, or the more broader term anyways.  Bone marrow by definition is stem cells.  The transplant can be done using actual marrow, peripheral blood stem cells (pbsc, they are a type of white blood cells) or cord blood.  I used cord blood in my transplant.

The transplant can be used to treat leukemias, lymphomas, myleomas and a few non cancerous blood diseases such as sickle cell.  It is in trials to treat most autoimmune diseases.  It can be used on conjunction with other organ transplants to give patients a chance to come off the anti rejection meds.  And it is the possible future cure to AIDS.

All of this, done with donor stem cells that hurt no one, other than cause a lil inconvience.  Cord blood is donated/banked only after a live healthy birth.  Marrow/pbsc donation are completly voluntary proceedures by adults.

http://www.marrow.org is the National Marrow Donors Program
