alright, I'm looking into trading in my car for something thats reasonably good on gas and fairly sporty, and I was wondering how these cars compare on their performance and reliability (and if possible how many miles I can put on it without major repair work)

all of them will be somewhere in the 2000-2004 range

Celica GT-S

Camry solara (the 4 cylinder one)

turbo jetta

saab 9-3 linear

v-6 mustang

Mazda 3

Civic

  1. I'd say to go with the civic, although it's not exactly sporty.  I do like the Celica, but it's not as cheap or easy to repair. The 'stang is a bad idea unless you have a lot of money.  They just don't hold up to a honda or toyota for reliability and longevity.  VW and Saab are again going to be more expensive to maintain and repair, probably more so than the Celica.

    So IMHO:

    Smart choice: Civic

    Fun choice: Celica

  2. I have a 1999 Camry Solara SLE V6 since new. It is the best and most smoothest running car I have ever owned--and I've owned many--at least 12 other kinds of cars. The Celica is good IF it has been serviced and not abused by its previous owner...that holds true for most cars. Camry Solara should pretty good mileage specially with a 4 cylinder. I have a V6 and get 21 in town and almost 30 on the highway. Mazda 3 cars are nice too. Jetta..naaaa  mustang...naaa they eat lots of gas. Civic has a good reputation and is good on gas too.I don't care for Saab--the name is ugly and so is the car..naaa!! Good luck!

  3. get a mazda 3. I heard that they are fuel efficient.

  4. The Jetta is the best best in my opinion. But you do have to run high octane gas in tank, all the time, you have to change the oil every 3000 miles, and you have to let the car sit after you park it a minute to cool the turbo down and get the oil to cool it down. But aside from that, it's the way to go. Volkswagens are still around for the fact that they do last.

  5. The civic by far is the best value. Ours has had very little wrong with it and gets excellent gas mileage. The two door is pretty sporty too!

  6. the honda civic gets awesome gas mileage and also lasts a very long time

  7. A lot is going to depend on the specific car you find, for example, Civic's really hold their resale value, so the Mazda or Celica might wind up being a better value. Couple points I''l make.....watch out for 3.8 liter Fords, they have a head gasket problem. (nhtsa.gov has a listing of recalls on their website, also as much as I hate to give them credibility for anything, since they also rate toasters and washing machines, Consumer reports can help you check if there's any duds in your list,) Also, in that year range you might be looking at Mazda Protoge instead of the 3. In my opinion the Solara has a bubble butt which makes the rear end look too big, Not that that's a bad thing, but...........And ever since one of my friends had a Saab, which was a total lemon, I'm kind of leery about endorsing them. What about a WRX? Not  pretty, but fast, Ultimately make sure you get the car checked out before you lay down the cash.
