Of the "name brand" TVs, Philips/Magnavox (same mfg.) are the bottom of the barrel - too many consumer complaints! BUT it is better than the cheap third tier, junk TVs like Vizio, Olevia, Ilo, Maxent, Insignia, Element, and Polaroid, along with all those other brands you've never heard of before, at least in TVs, because at least you have a chance of getting parts when it breaks down.

The two top brands in performance and reliability, in 37", 32", and 26" LCD are Panasonic and Sony followed by a slightly less expensive Toshiba. Buying refurbished is another question, entirely. First, it depends on who did the work. Second, what kind of warranty does it carry? As for me, I would NEVER buy refurbished, but some here would.
